Here’s an interview with Saundra.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Writing helps me process my thoughts. It can be both energizing and exhausting depending on the reason why I’m writing and if there is a deadline looming. I’ve learned it’s important for me to stay ahead of my writing deadlines to stay joyful and at peace.

How much research do you do?

I love researching my book topics. In my book Sacred Rest, I include a large amount of scientific research. I also spent many hours going through Bible commentaries and resources using the Logos Bible Software.

Music or silence?

Silence is best when I’m writing. I like the mental whitespace. It allows room for more creative thoughts and word pairings. Worship music is how I conclude long writing sessions. It helps me reconnect to God and give praise for whatever I accomplished during that time.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by hope. It’s the reason I went into the medical field and the reason I write.  Hope is lifegiving. It’s a balm to our wounds and it carries the possibility of healing, wholeness, and restoration. That’s what I pray my words and ministry bring to others.

What is your favorite book and why?

My favorite book is Hinds’ Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard. It is an allegorical novel describing the journey we all must take with the Good Shephard from our old identity to the new one He desires to give us. By looking at the process of redemption from the outside as an onlooker, I was able to see things about my own spiritual journey I had not recognized before. It was a revealing read.

What literary character is most like you?

I identify with the character Much-Afraid in Hinds’ Feed on High Places. I had a lot of fear and insecurity growing up. Like her, God has healed much in my past and brought me into a new place of confidence in Him.

What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?

The best money I have ever spent as a writer was getting an online writing mentor. I joined The Jerry Jenkins Writing Guild the first year it was offered. As a nonfiction writer, it’s important to be able to tell a good story to keep the reader interested. Nonfiction topics can get boring very fast. This one invest was a game changer in my writing career. Editors who had read my work before and after commented on how much my writing had improved over the years. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants an exception course on storytelling.

What’s your favorite thing about being an author?

I love reader feedback. Getting an email from a reader sharing how God has changed her life because of the words you’ve written is priceless.

What were you like as a child?

I am an only child and was an avid reader. I still read about 4 books monthly.

Your favorite toy?

My favorite toy growing up was the game Operation. It’s a miracle I didn’t decide to become a surgeon, but I was never great at that game! Internal medicine was a better fit for a career choice.

Do you have pets? Tell us about them.

I talk about our dog Rosie in Sacred Rest. She is a small solid white Havanese and 100{f65765d44da0bdf0a41fa9961eb42045133d946bf3cc534fe1ab1c919c81bf77} princess. In the story, I share about a time my family took her for a 2 mile walk. She’s not the kind of dog you take on a long walk unless you’re prepared to end up carrying her your arms (or purse).
