I’m very excited about offering a book drawing (and DVD) for one of the many books written by Erica Wiggenhorn: Unexplainable Jesus: Rediscovering the God You Thought You Knew.
Unexplainable Jesus is an 8 week Bible study of Luke about the life of Jesus. I have been using it for my daily Bible study and I’ve learned so much. Erica has the wonderful gift of researching and finding unique ideas we may not have thought of. Studying her book has enlarged my knowledge and touched my heart about knowing Jesus more deeply and intimately. Isn’t that what we all want?
Read below to learn how to enter the drawing to win a copy of her book and a DVD set of her teaching Unexplainable Jesus.
Here’s an excerpt from her book.
Something from Nothing
by Erica Wiggenhorn
I slammed the phone down in frustration. No matter how many times I vowed not to get upset or practiced my responses ahead of time, the conversation always seemed to end the same way- my feelings got hurt, propelling me toward anger. That hopeless feeling that I would never get past this unhealthy pattern erupted in tears. They welled up inside from the moment I first said, “Hello,” and heard the familiar voice on the other end of the line.
Sometimes there are circumstances or relationships in this life where we feel like we are striving and spinning our wheels with every ounce of energy we’ve got, only to go nowhere or circle back to the same bad place we sought so hard to escape. Jesus’ disciples certainly had those days.
Unexpected Expectations
In Luke 5, Jesus shows up in the morning after Peter, Andrew, James and John have experienced an exhausting night of fishing, with nothing to show for their hard labor. No fish meant nothing to sell, which meant no money for that day. Tired and defeated, these fishermen gathered their nets to wait until nightfall and give it another go. Jesus tells Peter to let down his net right now. Peter reluctantly concedes.
I can so relate to Peter’s response here. “If you say so, Jesus, I’ll do it,” but not really expecting anything worthwhile to come from my obedience.
How often do I pray about something or say I trust God, but continue to fret with worry or concoct plans in my head to try and secure the outcome I so desperately desire?
An Unexplainable Something
But Jesus does something unexplainable. When Peter attempts to pull the net back up out of the water, it is so full of fish, he has to ask the others to come help him. Immediately, Peter falls on his face before Jesus and exclaims, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”
These professional fishermen in Galilee knew you caught fish at night in the Sea of Galilee. No one in their right mind tried to catch fish during the day, it was a waste of time. I don’t think Peter expected a miracle. He certainly didn’t respond like someone who had just witnessed Jesus do what he had been anticipating all along.
It got me thinking. What if Peter’s nothing was so that Jesus could come along and do something? What if our effort, resulting in nothing, was Jesus’ plan to show up and do something unexplainable?
Have you ever had a circumstance, situation or relationship in your life where you felt like you were laboring your heart out with little to no result?
What kind of hope would it bring you to realize that your nothing was so that Jesus could come and do something unexplainable?
Maybe the very thing that feels like a no-win, no-way-out situation, is the very thing Jesus steps into and says to us, “I am the God who makes something from nothing–just trust me.”
Thank you Erica. I’m very challenged and inspired by your words.
Here’s more information about Unexplainable Jesus which features:
- in-depth study of Luke (40 lessons over 8 weeks)
- historical and cultural insights
- soul-searching questions
- access to extensive online resources
Step into the streets of Jerusalem and encounter the Jewish Rabbi who turned the world upside down. After rediscovering Jesus on the pages of the book of Luke—or maybe discovering Him for the very first time—you’ll see there is no other plan, goal, ambition, or Person worth following but Jesus.
You can enter the drawing by making a comment on my blog post on my website: I’ll draw the winner the evening of Monday, January 13, 2020. Only USA addresses can win. UPDATE: Laurie is the winner of the drawing. Congratulations!

I’ve been struggling as of late, and I don’t know where to look for help in the Bible. It makes me feel left out and alone
Thank you for sharing with us, Brenda. We hear your heart and its struggle. As those who have been there in different ways, we want you to know there is hope. “Lord God almighty, we pray for Brenda, for your love and strength to surround her and give her courage and hope from the inside out. We also pray and ask you to provide the support and help she needs. Direct her to the places in the Bible you know will misinterpreted to her. We pray in Jesus’s powerful Name, Amen.” Brenda, I have entered you into the drawing and thank you again for sharing with us. We will continue to pray for you.
Oh Brenda! Feeling lost and confused by the Bible is so relatable to me! That was my story for so many years and I often felt like the only one who didn’t seem to understand the scriptures! I pray you’ll find a good study to help walk you through the Scriptures and begin to understand the Bible more!! That is my whole reason for writing studies- to help women learn and understand the Scriptures!
Thank you, Nicci! Blessings to you!
Thks looks like a fabulous study to share with my women’s study group. Thanks for the opportunity.
Unexplainable and unexpected are perfect words to describe Jesus and His ministry.
Hi Jeanne, I put you into the drawing. And you are right: unexplainable and unexpected are truly two words describing Jesus and his ministry–and his work through each of us His children. I am loving Erica’s insightful commentary and questions. You will too.

Hi! Thanks for entering the drawing and coming by my blog. Thank you also for sharing about your challenging times. Erica’s book would definitely minister to you, as it will every one of us. And let’s pray right now for you. Heavenly Father, you know everything that this child of yours is suffering and going through. Comfort him right now with the assurance that even though you are unexplainable at times, he can trust you as he waits upon you for your direction and comfort. Guide him as you have promised you will. I pray in Jesus’s Name. Amen. We will continue to pray for you.
I’m so sorry! Prayers for a touch from the Savior! Physical pain affects us emotionally and spiritually as well. Prayers for you to sense His nearness to you!

Blessings to you.
I love your comment about “moving forward”! Yes and amen!!
Wow, yes I would definitely love this. It covers what is going on in my life as well as others. In our house we are struggling with a teen with adhd and other issues so a major challenge there as well as the teen being female which opens up even more challenges. Thank you for the opportunity.
Hi Rhonda, thanks so much for entering and sharing your challenges. For those of us with similar challenges, we can applaud your dependence upon the Holy Spirit’s fruit within you even though your daughter may not acknowledge it. “Lord, I pray for Rhonda in this time of riding this wave of family challenges. Give her wisdom in responding, insights into her daughter’s heart and emotions, and bring alongside those who have additional wisdom to share. Thank you for your faithful love for this family. In Jesus’s Name. Amen. Blessings to you.
Prayers for you and your family, Rhonda! We have two teenagers in our home right now also, so girl, I FEEL ya!! And one with ADHD! Prayers for wisdom, patience, understanding and discernment!!
Nothing to Something! I would love to share this with my Sunday School group. Everyone is facing different spiritual struggles and sometimes a different perspective is all we need. I greatly look forward to reading this study!
I’m so glad you see the value of a group studying Erica’s book. I can guarantee they will love it because studying the life of Jesus which includes the responses of those around Him includes the challenges every person is facing. Thanks for entering the drawing.
Truly, there are so many struggles in this life. We all walk through hard things. The beautiful thing about Jesus is how faithful He continually is to meet us right in the middle of our pain pointing to a new perspective. In doubt, difficulty and darkness, He comes, taking us by the hand and gently leading us into the light of His goodness!
The title of the book stopped me from scrolling on through to other emails. I think it could be great for my women’s bible study group or for my husband and me to study together. Father God has recently called my husband back into His arms. Taking me along too. wanting to go deeper once again to who God is, not always what is taught. I am disabled waiting on revelation from all I have and will go through. My husband is self-employed. we get by on a tight living but God is ever so faithful to see us through. To win this would be a great asset to us as it would be to the other ladies that have entered to win. Praise be to our wonderful Lord and savor, Daddy God and the wonderful Holy Spirit. Kim
Thank you Kimberly for entering the drawing. I love your heart as as you seek the Lord and you and your husband depend upon him in some “tight living.” I love your idea about you and your husband studying Erica’s book together. I know you would both love it and continue the journey ever closer to your Savior for both of you. How fabulous you are both walking together spiritually. I’m praising God.
Dearest Kim, your love for our Savior shouts through most loudly in your precious words of adoration! Many blessings to you and your husband!
