Last week, I saw something that bugged me. I was shopping in a lingerie store, and I saw a teenaged boy, maybe 16 years old, take two bras to the door of one of the fitting rooms. The door opened and a woman I have to assume was his mother because of her age, reached out, exposing the bra she had on, and took the bras from her son.
What?????
My eyes almost bugged out. And I was bugged! I don’t know how I didn’t say anything to this mother.
Can you imagine his raging hormones being scintillated by negligee and lingerie?
Can you imagine the inappropriateness of any teenaged boy seeing his mother in her bra?
Can you imagine him being put in a situation where he seemingly is helpless to express his feelings of embarrassment and refuse to be exposed?
Let me know if I’m bothered inappropriately, but this bothers me.
I always have similar feelings when I see a teenaged couple shopping in the lingerie store. I’m wondering how the boy handles his hormones. And I wonder if the girl has any idea of what goes on in that boy’s mind and heart and body.
Of course, we can say that any boy has been exposed to all the things in the store in his mother’s bedroom, or in the laundry, and on TV through commercials. So maybe it’s not any different. It’s just a sad part of our society.
Fortunately, there are those who try to counteract it. I so appreciate Jill Savage’s blog post entitled, “5 Ways to Help Your Daughter Select a Modest Homecoming Dress.” (JillSavage.org). Check it out. She has some great ideas. And I highly recommend her blog. I always am encouraged as a Christian woman when I read her wisdom. She is a wife, mom of five, and the founder and CEO of Hearts at Home, an organization that encourages, educates and equips moms of all ages and stages of motherhood.
Her latest book is No More Perfect Moms. Even if you have an empty nest, there’s bound to be someone in your life that could benefit from this book.
I’m curious. Would you have said anything to that mom in the lingerie store? If so, what would you have said? Or, are we all afraid of lingerie store rage—(related to road rage)?
