I was meditating on 1 Kings 19:13: “When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave And behold, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (NASB).
I noticed this:
A: available. Elijah came out of his cave to seek God.
B: believing. He believed he would hear from God.
C: clutter-free. He wrapped his face in his mantle so that all other distractions would be gone. I think this applies both to outside forces and inner messages (IE. “Why should God even want to talk to me?”)
And here’s a “D” just for good measure: From the verses in the whole chapter, I get the impression Elijah was dependent. He was devoid of his own resources for solving his problem and he was hungry for knowing God’s ideas.
It’s really simple, just the ABC’s!
By the way, what tone of voice do you hear God’s voice when He says, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Is He frustrated? Condemning? Gentle? Soft? Inviting?
How we “hear” God’s tone could indicate whether we want to hear from Him!
Interesting concept and one to think about. I always learn more about God's word and his love and care for us when reading your blog! Jennifer
